How to Build a Football Practice Plan in Under 15 Minutes

July 14, 2026

The practice plan is usually the last thing that gets written and the first thing that falls apart once players start rotating through stations. The fix isn't a fancier plan — it's a faster one, so you actually have time to adjust it when reality doesn't cooperate.

Start with periods, not drills

Before picking a single drill, block out your practice into periods — warmup, individual, group, team, special teams, conditioning, cooldown. Assigning time first keeps a plan realistic instead of aspirational; it's much easier to notice "I have 90 minutes of drills and 60 minutes of practice" before you're standing on the field than after.

Pull from a saved drill library instead of starting from scratch

Every practice plan re-uses most of last week's drills with small changes. A saved drill library — organized by category (warmup, individual, group, team, special teams, conditioning, cooldown) with a duration attached to each one — turns "build a practice plan" into "assign drills to periods," which is a much faster problem to solve.

  • Browse a preset library if you're starting from nothing — a set of built-in drills covers most of what a typical practice needs on day one.
  • Add your own drills with a name, category, duration, and a linked video if you want your staff referencing the exact technique you teach.

Let AI draft the first pass

Once you have a drill library, generating a full timed schedule is mostly mechanical: pick a practice length and a focus for the day, and let it assemble periods, durations, and coaching cues into a draft you edit rather than write from scratch. You'll still adjust it — every staff has preferences about pacing and sequencing — but editing a reasonable draft is faster than filling a blank page.

Print it before you need it

A practice plan only helps if your staff can actually see it on the field. Print a clean, branded copy the night before instead of squinting at a phone between periods — paper still wins for anything you need to glance at mid-rep.
